
Fish Oil and ADHD
Millions of people are diagnosed each year with the disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). While some adults with ADHD is diagnosed mainly in children. Standard methods of treatment usually include prescription drugs can have side effects. A New research has found that fish oil can help minimize or alleviate the symptoms of ADHD. This adds to the hope that ADHD can be treated successfully with diet and supplements.
This finding is the result of an Oxford-Durham study of the dominant school children between five and 12 years of age with mild ADHD moderate. The study was a treatment trial of the effects of fatty acids in childhood behavior and learning. The study is completed over 12,000 assessments during the trial.
The study was random with some students taking a supplement of Omega-3 fatty acids, while others took a placebo. After three months, students who took Omega-3 had a significant improvement in schoolwork. The study used performance assessments of motor function, reading and spelling, along with teacher rated attention symptoms. The teachers observed that the behavior of children who took omega-3 was improved in those taking a placebo.
The decrease in symptoms of ADHD is an important finding showing that Omega-3 supplements can actually help improve or even eliminate many symptoms of ADHD. Deficiencies in Omega-3 may explain not only ADHD but also against similar diseases, such as dyslexia and autistism. This is the finding that parents of children affected by these disorders.
The study shows a clear link between dietary deficiencies and increased incidence of ADHD symptoms. Omega-3 It has been shown to reduce impulsivity, hyperactivity, poor concentration and inattention. This gives new hope to parents who wish to treat ADHD in children with an improved diet.
The first place to start is to eat foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids. The omega-3 fatty acids are found naturally in fish like salmon, cod, mackerel and sardines. Those who do not get enough Omega-3 to your diet should take a supplement of Omega-3. The study found The results of the Omega-3 supplement were about the same as the results are typically found in prescription medications for ADHD.
The University of South Australia has made a similar study and found that children who took supplements of Omega-3 showed a decrease in symptoms of ADHD.
Parents who are looking for a nontraditional treatment may want to consider giving omega-3 supplements to children with ADHD. Omega-3 supplements are available at Most pharmacies and drugstores. Not included in the typical products of daily consumption of vitamin or multivitamin supplements. Always follow instructions label and ask your child's physician before starting a new vitamin or supplement regimen.
