Tomorrow is my band's Festival!???
Hey! Tomorrow is my band's middle school festival! I'm not sure is you call it what we call it, but it's MPA Festival (Music Performance Assesment). I'm really nervous. I know I shouldn't be, but is there anything I say tomorrow in warm up to help everyone feel better, or anything at all I can do to help other than knowing my part? Our past band director has resigned for parenthood, and we have a new one. I don't think we will get superior ratings because 1. There are not many dedicated people in our band and 2. It's a new director. Not that's she's bad, don't get my wrong...she just doesn't have the expirence. She's been there 4 months. I think we will get excellents. Any suggestions? By the way, this is concert middle school band. In case you know the pieces, it's New South Wales March, Country Dances No. 1, and Song for the Wintermoon. It sucks...two 2's and a 1. Last year we played Cumberland Cross......2's and a 3. We got straight superiors. Oh well....thanks!
I hope your festival went really well...I can see fromy our posting date that it was today.
First of all, good for you that you are this dedicated at the middle school level. Please realize that the level of commitment that you display in your post is not universal for middle school students, so please don't be down on your group. You will notice a surge in dedication once you go to high school...the students who really do care will stick with you and give it the effort you are putting in yourself.
Secondly, and from a director's scope: every year cannot be your best year ever. Students move through year after year. Talented ones leave, and sometimes the influx does not replace them. You get what we like to call a "building year", where you are working up skills for success further down the road. The issue should not be about the level of pieces you are playing this year, but whether you personally are giving it your best effort. When your new director reads the judges' comment on Monday, listen to them and try to apply them to your personal playing. No matter what level the piece is, there is always something that you can focus on to challenge yourself.
