What are some costs and rewards of parenting?
Costs--Your free time. Time and energy to focus on problems of any sort. Time and energy to progress at work at the same pace as before. Private time with your spouse/partner. Time and ability to care for yourself when sick, stressed, exhausted, or just in need of down time. Kids are much more expensive than anyone is prepared for! Far less time and energy for friends and socializing. Your body will be forever changed. Reduced ability to travel. Total submission to someone else's needs and wants. Constant struggles and guilt over trying to always make the right decisions. Did I mention TIME AND ENERGY?
Rewards--a bond like no other. Love like you will never feel for anyone else. The chance to relive your own childhood's wonderful moments and recreate them for someone else, or the chance to re-do things from your childhood in a better way for someone else. Amazing moments almost daily as you watch your child grow and learn. Making new "mommy" friends. Seeing the world differently and noticing things you never noticed before. Having an excuse to play with cool kids toys and do messy art projects. A new bond between you and your spouse. New connections to your own parents, even if they are no longer living. Having a focus every day and a reason every morning to get out of bed (even if you're exhausted). An endless supply of Goldfish crackers in your kitchen.
