I want to be a journalist, What is the best start to take?

I'm currently on an NCTJ approved Uni course in journalism and broadcasting.
I know i need to do lots lots more though - i'm planning on writing for the student paper more, starting a blog, and gaining work experience (if anyone will ever give me a chance) - i know its hard, i know its competitive, and i know it pays low, but it's what i want and although i'm not a 'hard-nosed' angry competitive type, i'm willing to work hard for what i want.

What are the best steps/start for getting into writing on a regional/national paper/magazine?

What is the best step for getting into Childrens TV presenting ?

What is a typical starting salary for a local paper journalist?

Thankyou :) trying to think this career thing on my own is hard. And my parents would rather have me claiming from the socail then having a career, soo no advice from them.

Here are some simple rules for being a successful journalist:

1) Blame the US every time something goes wrong.

2) Whenever the US participates in an international humanitarian aid effort - accuse them of colonialism.

3) Repeat all propaganda from enemies of the US as if it were true.

4) Dismiss any attempt by the US to set the record straight regarding this propaghanda as untrue.

5) If the US gets involved in an international crisis or issue - accuse them of bullying and colonialism.

6) If the US does not get involved in the international issue or crisis - accuse them of shirking their international responsibilities.

7) If - despite all of your efforts - the US manages to resolve an international issue in a successful manner, spin things so that your country can claim all the credit.
