Just checking out history.. I wonder what happend in America 100 years BEFORE George Washington?
I was reading about George Washington on Wikipedia and learning more about him and his ancestors. Man, it goes way back! For instance, his parents, Augustine Washington & Mary Ball Washington.
Lawrence Washington was Augustine's father, George Washington's grandpa. What was life like then? We didn't have presidency then. It was 100 years before our 1st US president was born! =)
I'm curious as to what America looked like as far as who controlled what? What was home life like? It's just interesting. If you know of ways to deep digger into history please share. Pictures of people and places with dates is always a plus, text isn't always the only way to learn what it was like many many years ago. Thanks
Many of my ancestors came here in the 1620 and 1630s. I've been researching on Ancestry.com Didn't know any of this prior to four years ago. And I'm related to Geo. Washington's family, but of course, not directly through him. This time in history has me interested. I read up on it as much as I can: about the King Philip War, worship houses, contact with the indians and spread of disease (small pox) by the Europeans, villages and forts, plantations and sending some product back to England for profit, slaves and trading routes between Long Island or Rhode Island and Bermuda rest of the Caribbean and West Indies, Pilgrims and then Purtians.
Ways to dig: Look up a famous name on Ancestry.com and often times there is a story tag for that name. Find it interesting. Especially, when you take a name like Geo. Washington and follow it back like you had said but it often goes further..and then you find he is related to the Tudors or Plantagenets, in fact, many famous people are, as well as, the US presidents.
I watch PBS history shows, they have some interesting ones now about the Indians.
Yes, there is more beyond those old history school books and I'll never quench my knowledge.
I don't have photographs...sorry, I'm not a time-traveler.
