Single Parents and Writers...Help!?

I am writing a book about a single mother - 19 - of one. She lives is a flat with her child. Her mother and father live along the road and care for the baby when she is at work at the cafe. (so on and so forth)

But where could the father of the child be brought in?
What could I add to this story that would keep the reader interested?

Father could be away fighting a war.

Could be that he lost contact with the mother before she knew she was pregnant, and then he suddenly moves back in town and she runs into him at the cafe where she works. <-- That would make for a very interesting plot.

Could be that he died. Maybe the brother of the father could be brought into the story as a potential love interest of the mother. I've read books similar to that.

Could be the father "ran away" when he found out he was to be a father, because he was not ready... Only to decide a year or two later that he REALLY does want to be a father, so he gets his life straight (job, house, etc.) and then tries to come find the mother and the baby, but at that point the mother doesn't know whether to trust him and "let" him into the baby's life or not... <--- Happens in real life all the time. Could be interesting.
